A sign of the increasing crossover between contemporary subcultures, Amanda S. and Le Messie’s Better off Dead reimagines high fashion and punk iconography with a certain steetwear flavor. The actual realization of the idea presents many opportunities for ending up seriously contrived, but the duo guard themselves from reaching that point by infusing a cheeky humor and aiming to create counter-culture parody as opposed to attempting an overly lofty reconstruction of any of the aforementioned cultures.
The collection is comprised of street staples; pullovers, tees, and hoodies in a strictly monochromatic palette. Their references to the luxury set: Hermes, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent among others, are liberally doused in ghoulish designs. Le Messie and Amanda S. do a nice job of balancing the imagery and keeping the tone understated, none of the street, fashionista or punk motifs overwhelms the others. As a result, the pieces could find a home in a diverse array of wardrobes looking to dip into other waters in a non-committal way.
